Coach Questions, Straight Answers

Q1

Why do hamstring pulls spike in August camp?
A June or August pull is not bad luck. Detrained legs, lactic conditioning, and heat stack on top of each other, and roughly 80 percent of sprint hamstring strains hit the long head of the biceps femoris. Sprint exposure all summer, eccentric work, and load progression beat any single drill. The full hamstring resource →
Q2

Do high school football coaches need GPS?
No. GPS is a load-management tool, not a magic wand. Four free proxies get you about eighty percent of the way home: time on feet, a jump mat, a Monday versus Thursday sprint time, and a 1 to 10 RPE log on a whiteboard. Manage the weekly band, not the gadget. GPS for Football →
Q3

How heavy should a speed sled be?
Load the sled to the sprint phase you are training, as a percentage of the athlete's bodyweight. Acceleration work takes real load. Top-end speed takes far less. Surface and sled type shift the math, so treat any chart as a guide. The calculator runs the phase math per athlete. Sled Load Calculator →
Q4

How do you track hydration in camp?
Weigh in, weigh out, every practice. Bodyweight loss is the number that does not lie: it puts each kid in a zone and tells you the ounces he has to put back before the next session. That is how we run it at URI. The board does the math and flags the red zones. The Hydration Board →
Q5

Does neck training matter for football?
Every one pound increase in neck strength drops the odds of a concussion about five percent (Journal of Primary Prevention, 2014). Build it in small doses, early: direct neck work plus trap-neck work, a little heavier each week, starting weeks before pads go on. Neck Ramp Builder →
Q6

Should football players lift in-season?
Yes. The season is the longest training block of the year, and teams that park the barbell in October are weaker in November when the games matter most. Two short sessions a week hold strength and armor. Cut the volume, keep the intensity, never go to zero. In-Season →
Q7

How do you test maxes with 60 kids and one hour?
You do not put 60 kids under a grinding one-rep max on a clock. Rep-max sets plus relative-intensity math give you a training max that is safe, fast, and accurate enough to program from. Test reps, calculate the number, move on to coaching. Relative Intensity Calculator →
Q8

What should freshmen do in the weight room?
Not your varsity program with lighter weights. Sort kids by training age, not by grade. A first-year lifter earns technique, positions, and bar speed before he earns percentages. The sort sheet puts every kid on the right track in one session. Training Age Sort →
