I like to throw out challenges to my staff from time to time. Not busy work. Not fluff. Real problems I haven’t had time to solve myself, but still care about getting done. I never give out a challenge I couldn’t figure out if I had to. The real question is: who’s willing to put in the level of effort I’d bring to the table to solve it? This week, I tossed out a simple request: "Can someone figure out how to take a panoramic photo of our newly painted weight room that works in an Instagram carousel?" (Check it out here if you want to see the paint job) I knew the answer wasn’t hard to find. Probably a quick Google search, maybe an app download, and a couple test shots. But between everything else going on, I didn’t have the time to dive in myself. The only person to step up and get it done? Our intern, Kevin. And here’s the kicker. Kevin might have the least active social media account on our entire staff. But when it came time to produce a result, he delivered. No hesitation. No excuses. And I can promise you this. When Kevin’s name comes up during reference checks, I’ll be able to say with full confidence that he embraced challenges, looked for ways to make our department better, and put in real effort to solve problems even when he didn’t know the answer upfront. If you're a young coach reading this: Find the challenges around you. Take ownership. Solve problems. Build that muscle. Don’t wait for someone to hand you a perfect task list. Train yourself to see the gaps, step up, and figure it out. That’s the stuff that gets noticed. And more importantly, that’s the stuff that will take you far in life.
