I'm a bit of a movie buff (my old man loved movies). One of my favorite movie scenes comes from a great movie called Gattaca. The movie takes place in a future where genetic engineering determines your fate. The elite are born with perfect DNA, engineered for strength, intelligence, and endurance, while those born naturally are considered in-valid, unfit to compete at the highest levels of society. The main character, Vincent, was born naturally. His brother, Anton, was genetically engineered to be superior in every measurable way, stronger, faster, with greater lung capacity and endurance. Throughout their childhood, the two brothers play a dangerous game called "Chicken", racing each other by swimming straight out into the ocean. The first to turn back loses. Anton, being the superior athlete, always wins. But one day, as adults, they race again. This time, Vincent refuses to quit. Stroke after stroke, he pushes forward, deeper into the ocean. Eventually, Anton, despite being genetically superior, reaches his limit. He starts drowning, and Vincent has to pull him back to shore. Gasping for air, Anton asks: “How are you doing this?” And Vincent gives one of the greatest lines in any movie: "I never saved anything for the swim back." That line sticks with me, and I say it to my athletes all the time. Vincent wasn’t supposed to win. On paper, he had no business even competing. But he didn’t pace himself. He didn’t leave room for failure. He committed fully. Too many athletes, and too many people, go through life holding something back. They play it safe. They stay comfortable. They give just enough effort to look like they’re trying, but never enough to truly break through their limits.
Vincent won that race not because he was physically superior, but because he was mentally unbreakable. That’s the mentality I want my athletes to have. If you’re stepping under a bar, stepping onto a field, or stepping into any challenge, you can’t be worried about the swim back. You burn the boats. You go all in. You push beyond what you think is possible. That’s how real breakthroughs happen. That’s how you separate yourself. So ask yourself: Are you holding something back? Or are you giving it everything you’ve got? Because the ones who truly succeed, they don’t save anything for the swim back.
