Dress for the Job You Want

Today’s letter was inspired by a simple but insightful question from my assistant, Noah. As I prepared to present at the NSCA New England Regional Conference on Scores and Stops, Noah asked me: “What’s the dress code for the conference?” It’s a great question, and one that speaks volumes about how you present yourself. My answer was simple: You dress for the job you want. When you’re an Intern or a GA, your attire matters. I’d expect nothing less than khakis and a polo at minimum. Why? Because you’re showing that you’re ready for the next step in your career. You’re signaling that you’re professional, detail-oriented, and serious about this field—not just in your work but in your appearance as well. As for me? Today, I’m rocking a URI pullover—something I’d wear to work any day of the week. Why? Because I’m already living the dream. The job I want? I’ve got it. Every day, I get to show up at the University of Rhode Island and work with incredible athletes. I get to lead a staff of assistants and interns who elevate our department. My job provides an amazing life for my family. Lastly, I get to play a role in some amazing experiences—like winning our first football championship in 39 years. The job I want is the one that lets me do all of this. And today, I’m proud to stand in front of a room full of coaches, rocking my Rhody Strength pullover, sharing the knowledge and passion that has brought me here. So, here’s the lesson: Dress for the job you want, but more importantly, work for it. Whether you’re an Intern, GA, Assistant, or Director, carry yourself like someone who’s already earned that next step. Your actions, attitude, and attention to detail will always speak louder than what you’re wearing—but what you wear can send a powerful message about who you’re striving to become. And when you’ve worked hard enough to land the job you’ve always wanted? Be proud of it. Represent it well. And never stop striving to make it even better. Keep the Fire Burning, Leech
