Like many coaches, I’m always reflecting on what words of wisdom I can share with our team. Every year brings a new group, a new identity, and with that, the opportunity to deliver messages that truly resonate. Coming off our first conference championship in 39 years, I’ve been reflecting on a topic that feels especially important this year: sustaining excellence. One of my favorite authors, Brad Stulberg, has written extensively on this topic, and I highly recommend his article, 10 Rules for Sustaining Excellence. His rules are simple, yet profound, offering practical guidance for anyone looking to maintain success over time. While I plan to talk with our team about sustaining excellence, it’s equally important for me as a Director to ensure my staff is living these principles as well. Reflecting on how smooth our first full week of Spring Training went, it’s clear to me that our staff embodies many of these rules. Their commitment to consistency and attention to detail sets the tone for the entire program. And as Brad mentions in his final rule: The people around you shape you. The culture of excellence we’re building isn’t just for the athletes, it’s for all of us. I’d love to hear your thoughts: Which of Brad’s rules do you agree with the most? Or, which one do you or your staff need to work on? Shoot me an email, I’d love to connect and hear your perspective! Let’s keep finding ways to sustain and build upon our success, both on and off the field.
