Improve Your Agility Drill

Over the next few weekends, I’ll be hitting the road to present on my latest course, Scores and Stops, at a couple of Strength & Conditioning Clinics. On the 18th, I’ll be at the NSCA New England Regional Clinic in Maine, and on the 26th, I’ll be at the Duke Sports Performance Clinic. Both weekends will be amazing opportunities to learn, grow, and connect with other coaches in the field. One big lesson I’m excited to share during my talks is how to manipulate agility drill variables to keep training fresh, fun, and—most importantly—better translate to on-field success. The five variables I focus on are: 1. Size of Space 2. Starting Positions 3. Obstacles 4. Objectives / Goals 5. Multiple Players / Roles By tweaking just one of these variables, you can take a simple drill like 1v1 Static Faceguard and completely change its purpose, difficulty, and effectiveness. Whether you want to challenge decision-making, simulate game-like conditions, or target specific movement patterns, these variables are your toolbox. In preparing for these clinics, I’ve created new drills simply by sitting down and asking myself how I can adjust these variables to push athletes in new ways. It’s a reminder that innovation doesn’t always mean reinventing the wheel—it often comes from refining what’s already working. If you can’t make it to the clinics but want to dive deeper into Scores and Stops, you can check it out here:
