I saw a quote on social media that really hit home this week. “The lack of masculinity in modern men is reflected in their inability to accept Tough Love. Everyone likes to say ‘iron sharpens iron,’ but when it’s time to do the sharpening, they realize it’s an abrasive process that often wounds the ego.” This made me think about how we coach athletes today. We all love to talk about “tough love”—pushing athletes to be their best, holding them accountable, and being honest when they fall short. But the reality is, today's generation of athletes struggles with this more than ever. They're quick to shut down or push back when faced with that hard truth. They’re not always ready for the friction that makes them better. So, how do we as coaches navigate this? The job is still to sharpen them, but we need to be aware of the tools we’re using to do it. Tough love doesn’t mean yelling, it doesn’t mean punishment for the sake of it. It means setting standards, pushing athletes past their comfort zones, and being real with them about what it takes to succeed—while showing them that you’re doing it because you believe in their potential. It’s on us to find that balance. To push hard but also to show that it’s from a place of trust and respect, not frustration or ego. Some athletes will embrace it right away, and some will resist. But the sharpening process is what separates those who reach their potential from those who don’t. If we want to keep the “iron sharpens iron” mentality alive, we need to understand how to deliver tough love in a way that resonates with this generation. Keep holding them accountable, but also make sure they know that it's because you see greatness in them. Until next time, Keep the Fire Burning. Leech Need help with Offseason Field Work?
