A while back I saw a tweet about midseason tackling drills that stuck out to me (I'm going to give Andy Ryland credit because it sounds like him). By midseason, there's enough information out on film to identify tendencies. Like it or not, offenses will find ways to exploit your defense. They will figure out where the open space is and how to get the ball to their playmakers in that space. As a coach, your tackling drills should reflect this disadventageous position for the defense. Work on tackling in the open field, from trail positions, and without the traditional benefit of the sideline to assist in leveraging the football. Today, I wanted to share a drill we've used in the offseason to work on these skills that I think would be great drill to add into your weekly gameplan. 4 Defenders Drill Create a box from Hash to Hash and from G to 15. Place a defender on each corner. Number the defenders 1-2-3-4. As the Coach, Stand at the 15 going in. Place 1 offensive player at the 10y going in.
Start the drill by yelling out one of the four numbers. That defender will then run into the box and attempt to tag, thud, or tackle the offensive player (you as a coach decide the intensity level!) The offensive player will turn around when they hear a number, catch the football you throw them, then attempt to score while staying inside the hashes. Why I like this Drill For your defenders, it addresses that disadvantageous open field tackling scenarios we mentioned earlier. For skill players, it forces them to very quickly identify the most dangerous man and make a play in order or score. Do you find drills like this helpful? Would you add this to your practice? If not, let me know why, I'm all ears! If you do like this, be on the lookout for something huge from me at the end of the year.... Until next time, Keep the Fire Burning.
