4 Questions to Ask Yourself

Every week, I challenge my staff to reflect. Not just on their work, but on how life outside the weight room is going. This week, I asked them to answer four simple, yet revealing questions: 1. What’s working? 2. What’s NOT working? 3. What do I need more of? 4. What do I need less of? The answers provided insight that might help you, too. (By the way, I’ve attached the worksheet to this email. Feel free to fill it out for yourself!) Interestingly, everyone had plenty to say about “what’s NOT working.” It’s natural—we’re wired to focus on the negative. But here’s the thing: if we only fixate on the problems, we miss the wins. Recognizing what is working is just as important. It helps us stay on the right track and keep pushing forward. As coaches, it’s easy to get discouraged by what’s not clicking—whether it’s a player underperforming or a phase of the game that’s off. But don’t let those frustrations blind you from what’s going well within your program. The “More of” question also came easily. We’re always looking to add, improve, and do more. But when it came to “What do I need less of?” that’s where the struggle began. It’s hard to step back and say, “I need less of this.” Whether it’s actions, people, or thoughts, knowing what to cut can be tougher than deciding what to add. Our instinct is to outwork our problems: add more training, more lifting, more stretching. But sometimes, success comes from doing less. Focusing on what’s truly effective and cutting the clutter can be the game-changer. I encourage you to download the worksheet and reflect on these questions. If you do complete it, and you want to connect, reach out. I’m always open for that conversation. Until next time, Keep the Fire Burning.
