Leech Letter #14 - Hard Work isn’t the Answer

As I spent time this week working with my staff and our Sport Coaches, this idea consistently came to the forefront.

In American sports, “hard work is everything” is a mindset. Athletes and coaches push limits, believing more effort equals no regrets. But this mindset has a negative side.

Coaches feel pressure to justify their roles through wins and losses. Facing defeat, the instinct to double down and fix issues by working harder seems logical. Yet, this often backfires.

Excess focus on problems robs athletes of their freshness and joy for the game. It signals a lack of faith in our systems and leads to burnout. We’ve all grinded through a bad season where it feels more like work than fun.

The alternative? Balance. Address weaknesses, but not at the expense of well-being or the love of the sport. Success isn’t just hard work; it’s smart, joyful work.

Let’s not equate victory with overwork. A sustainable, balanced approach respects athletes’ well-being and the game’s integrity. Winners believe in efficiency. That’s the real path to greatness.

To summarize, it’s not about pushing harder but leading smarter. Excellence comes from nurturing, not just demanding. Remember, the heart of the game is its people and their passion.

Keep thar fire burning.
