Leech Letter #13 - Two Keys to Success

I had a meeting this week with one of our Sport coaches. We reflected on how the season went and then focused our vision on the goal in front of us; winning championships.

In my opinion, two things stand out in a Championship Level Program. High Expectations and High Support. I’ll break down why each one is critical, and why one by itself isn’t enough.

First up, High Expectations – it’s that fire in your belly that believes greatness isn’t a gift but a given, provided you’ve got the guts to chase it. In our world, it’s not just about loading the bar; it’s about believing that every athlete we coach can lift it. And not just lift, but launch it. As a Coach, it’s on us to set that expectation for our Student-Athletes and challenge them to rise to it.

Next is High Support. And not just the pat on the back type of support. It’s the real, genuine kind of support. The kind that says, “I’ve got you, no matter how heavy the lift.” It’s spotting them in the gym and in life, being there, fully engaged, every step of the way.

High expectations without High Support is a recipe for failure. Asking a program to win a championship, without a championship level of surrounding support is a daunting task. Asking athletes to load the bar without guiding them to that point will only get them hurt.

On the flip side, High Support without the push to excel? That’s how programs settle into a life of average. It’s like cheering on an athlete for just showing up, not for leveling up.

What we need to do is combine High Expectations and High Support. Expect the best, provide the best support, and watch as not just our athletes, but all of our relationships, transform into something legendary.

In the gym, this means pushing your athletes beyond what they see as their limits, but also being there to guide, teach, and motivate them every step of the way. It’s about setting that bar high, and then lifting them up to reach it.

Keep challenging yourself, and all the athletes you work with. Success starts with you.

Keep the fire burning.
