This week’s letter comes straight from my ice bath, yes, the one I finally refilled and set to a brutally low temp. The inspiration? A podcast I listened to with Andrew Huberman and Michael Easter, the author of The Comfort Crisis. (Here it is if interested) Easter talked about the idea of the 2%. When given the choice between the stairs and the escalator, 98% of people choose the easy route, even though they know the stairs are better for them in the long run. The 2% are the ones who consistently choose the harder path, embracing discomfort to reap long-term rewards. It got me thinking: are we pushing our athletes to be part of that 2%? Are we teaching them to embrace the tough choices? From proper nutrition and hydration, to putting away their phones, getting enough sleep, and staying committed to every detail that leads to success? It’s not easy, but those who choose the stairs over the escalator, day in and day out, are the ones who rise to the top. Not everyone can be a 2%er, and that’s okay. But our job is to guide our athletes toward those tougher choices, to challenge them to take the stairs more often, and to keep challenging ourselves to do the same. Until next time, Keep the Fire Burning, Leech
