The Road Less Traveled: The Extra Mile
In a world obsessed with 'efficiency' and passive expectations, the path of the Extra Mile is increasingly deserted. Yet, it's along this less worn path that the most significant opportunities lie for those willing to push beyond the norm. It's not merely about putting in more hours; it's about embracing a higher standard of thoughtfulness, commitment, and engagement. These are the traits that transition the good to the great, ensuring a person's impact is unforgettable.
A Lesson in Going Beyond
Let me take you back over a decade ago, during my internship at the University of Missouri. At a summer staff meeting, Pat Ivey posed a challenge: integrate before and after photos into our macro-coded athlete progress reports. Around the table, the consensus was it was too complex for Excel. The solution seemed to be a tedious manual task—until Andrew Paul stepped up. After the meeting the Physical Therapist ,now the Director of Athletic Performance and Rehabilitation for the OKC Thunder, reached out to an Excel expert, mastered the necessary macro, and put the stack of 100 athletes on Pat's desk overnight. No fanfare, just results. That's the essence of going the Extra Mile.
In Search of the Extra Mile Walkers
In my role, spotting those who take the Extra Mile is key. It's fine to not have all the answers in an interview, but following up with solutions shows dedication. Discovering connections within our staff or clearly discussing our teams' histories demonstrates a willingness to invest that extra effort. These actions signal a readiness to embrace challenges that others might shy away from.
The Unpopulated Stretch of Greatness
Choosing to walk the Extra Mile is a decisive step towards distinguishing oneself in a sea of mediocrity. It's in these unpopulated stretches that true greatness is forged, far from the comfort zones of the majority. It's on this less traveled road that we carve out our legacy.
