Right now in our offseason program, we’ve hit Mat Drills season. Twice a week, our football staff runs the team through six stations of competitive drills, evaluating each player’s effort along the way. Any player who earns a ‘+’ at all six stations is recognized for Championship Effort. Now, I’ll be the first to admit—I don’t love everything about Mat Drills. But I can absolutely appreciate the lesson behind them. Because it’s not good enough to show up with great effort at just the first station when you’re fresh and ready. It’s not good enough to go hard only when you know you’re being watched. The challenge isn’t about being great once—it’s about consistently bringing a high level of effort across the board, no matter the circumstances. That lesson carries over directly to the weight room. • Do you only give championship effort when the coaches are grading you? • Do you bring that same intensity to the warmup and accessories, or just the main lift of the day? • Are you just checking boxes, or are you actually attacking everything with intent? Because here’s the truth: Championship effort isn’t situational. It’s easy to flip the switch when it’s obvious that effort is being measured. It’s harder to bring that same focus when no one’s keeping score. But the guys who do? They separate themselves. And just like football, this applies to life after the game as well. The habits you build now— how you approach training, how you handle adversity, how consistent your effort is—will carry over to every part of your life. Championship effort isn’t about turning it on when it’s convenient. It’s about making it who you are. Keep the Fire Burning,
