Do You Take Pride In Your Hurt?

Leech Letters #37 - Do You Take Pride In Your Hurt?

While I could talk about the quote from one of my dad's old sticky notes that went viral on social media this week, I want to focus on a different quote that struck me recently instead.

If anyone knows the source please let me know

In coaching, we often fall into the trap of believing that long hours, endless film study, and being the "first in, last out" is a measure of how dedicated we are. We romanticize the grind, convinced that it proves our worth, maybe even thinking that others are watching and silently appreciating the sacrifice we make.

But here’s the hard truth—most people are too caught up in their own work to care about ours.

We think the endless hours are showing the world how committed we are. We believe it’s a way of saying, “Even if we lose, they can’t say I didn’t work hard enough.” But in reality, no one’s keeping score of the time we spend. We’re often romanticizing the grind for no one but ourselves, playing out a narrative of struggle and sacrifice that no one else is watching.

That’s where the quote really hit me. Are we taking pride in the struggle simply for the sake of it? Are we grinding ourselves down, believing it makes us "larger and tragic," when all we're doing is playing a role for an audience that isn’t there?

The truth is, everyone else is too busy with their own grind. They're not noticing how many hours we put in or how tired we are. So, who are we doing it for? If it’s not leading to real results, if it’s not helping us grow, then it’s just noise.

This season, let’s shift the focus. Let’s stop glorifying the hours spent and start paying attention to the impact of those hours. Because, at the end of the day, the grind isn’t what defines us—what we produce from it does.

So stop romanticizing the effort just for the sake of it. Make it count.

Keep the fire burning.
