Leech Letters #18 - Rams of Steel

This week I had the privilege of awarding our Male and Female Rams of Steel here at the University of Rhode Island. Think S&C Athlete of the Year with a more exciting title and a badass ram statue for the bookshelf.

What does it mean to be the S&C Athlete of the Year? How does that get determined? I am sure plenty of other coaches hand out this award, but I thought it would be valuable to share what it takes to win the Ram of Steel at URI.

The first criteria is that S&C needs to be a catalyst for your success. Without a commitment to Strength and Conditioning, you would never have become the champion on the field or court that you are. Our Male Ram of Steel, Lorenzo Thompson, embodies the success that comes from deeply committing to Strength and Conditioning.

Lorenzo showed up as a 250lb soaking wet undersized Offensive Linemen. All he ever did was bring fire and intensity to anything related to Football. Through a commitment to the process and a relentless attitude towards doing the difficult things in life, he left a 300lb All-Conference player with an undrafted free agent contract with the Cleveland Browns in this year's NFL Draft.

The second asked of a Ram of Steel is, “how much the lessons learned from S&C have impacted you as a person and an athlete?” Our Female Ram of Steel, Nadia Rajan, is a shining example of this. The confidence gained from lifting weights once thought to be impossible has only fueled Nadia's success in life and on the Tennis court. Nadia completed the rigorous 4+1 Master's in Kinesiology program while also being one of the best tennis players in the A10 confidence. She never backed down from a challenge, whether it was a 315lb Trap Bar Deadlift PR or an opponent on the court.

It was an absolute privilege to coach these two athletes over the past 2 years. I look forward to seeing them succeed for the rest of their lives. I'm also excited for the year ahead, to see who rise and take home next year's Ram of Steel.

Until next week, keep the fire burning.Leech
