Leech Letters - Issue #17 - Insecurity
Another Saturday Morning, Another Leech Letter!
This past week, at the NSCA RI State Clinic, we had a great presentation on Imposter Syndrome from Dave Downey over at Brown University.
We all deal with some level and form of Imposter Syndrome. Whether we believe we don't deserve a higher salary, or we believe we need to work 60+ hours a week to justify our jobs, or we constantly compare ourselves to others on Instagram, Imposter Syndrome rears its ugly head everywhere.
At the end of the day, these feelings of insecurity will always pop up.
Overworking is a sign of insecurity. When we lack confidence in our work, we compensate by doing more for the sake of doing more. If we lose, at least it's not from a lack of effort. But overworking will never really cure that feeling of insecurity, just mask it for a while.
Underworking is also a sign of insecurity. When you're scared to fail you don't give your all to protect your ego. Think the cool kid in school who doesn't even try at anything. While this strategy may help you momentarily, it won't solve your long term insecurity issues.
Confidence and feeling secure comes from putting in the work, having pride in yourself and your values, and having the courage to take action at work. The easiest way for young strength coaches to overcome Imposter Syndrome is through finding out who they are as a coach. And that only comes from hours on the floor, learning from mistakes, and from holding firm to personal values and beliefs.
Continue to challenge yourself. Provide the best programs and training to your student-athletes. Ask more of them, as well as yourself. Believe in yourself, you're changing lives for the better.
Keep the fire burning.
