The Notes
Football return to play is where games are won and lost in season, and Dr. Mark Murphy runs it at the highest level as the applied sports science and performance lead at the Mass General Brigham Center for Sports Performance and Research.
Murph was a walk-on defensive lineman at URI who earned a scholarship, tore his ACL, and came back to run rehab and return to play for the same program. We walk through the two injuries coaches ask me about most: ankle sprains and hamstring strains. What to do when the doctor's note says "nothing for two weeks," the three Cs system, free tests that need zero equipment, the 10x10 protocol for reintroducing sprinting, isometrics from injury day zero, and why weekly top-speed exposure is the cheapest hamstring insurance there is.
