I think it's safe to assume a good number of readers have heard of the YouTuber Mr. Beast (especially if you have kids). He's the most subscribed YouTube account in the world at amount 450 MILLION subscribers.
Back in 2015 he recorded a YouTube video called 'Hi Me in 10 Years' and set it for release after 10 years had passed.
In the short video he mentions he has 8,000 subscribers and his lofty goal is to hit 1 Million. Achieving that number would be a dream come true for him. Not only did he hit his goal, he 450x'd it.
People often overestimate what they can do in a short burst of time. But they underestimate what’s possible over a long haul, like 10 years.
Setting those big goals and having the patience to chip away at them is where the magic happens.
I even see it in URI's Athletic Director who is leaving after 18 years of guiding the Athletics Program. I'm sure the vision in Year 1 is nothing compared to the positive change he was able to make over his tenure at URI.
So, what’s the takeaway? We need to remind our athletes (and ourselves) that the real game isn’t just about the next practice or the next week.
It’s about staying consistent and aiming high over the long run.
Set those big goals, speak them out loud, and then just put your head down and get back to work. You'll be proud when you pick your head up in 10 years time.
