Pressure is a Privilege

On Instagram this week I saw this interview with Boston Celtics Head Coach Joe Mazzulla. Mazzulla talked about how expectation, pressure, and criticism aren’t burdens— they’re compliments. They’re proof that others believe in your abilities. I'll share the clip here -> https://www.instagram.com/reel/DA9yEEFNfW1/?igsh=ZGEyMWo0MWc3anA0 This mindset is something we need to pass on to our athletes. Pressure only comes when you’ve earned the right to feel it. Criticism isn’t there to tear you down—it’s a sign that people see your potential and expect more from you. But, just like Mazzulla mentioned, the problem isn’t the pressure itself—it’s how we interpret it. Too often, today’s athletes see it as a threat instead of a compliment. As coaches, we need to help them shift that mindset. Pressure is a privilege. If you feel it, it means you’ve worked hard enough to earn the responsibility that comes with it. Criticism can sting, but it’s also a gift—it means someone believes you’re capable of doing better. We have to teach athletes that iron sharpens iron, but sharpening isn’t always comfortable. It’s an abrasive process that requires facing your weaknesses and pushing past your limits. Growth isn’t always pleasant, but it’s necessary. Mazzulla also reminded us that pressure only has the power you give it. At the end of the day, it’s just words—whether from coaches, media, or fans. What matters is how you respond. Are you going to let it crush you, or will you use it as fuel? So here’s my challenge for all of us: Lean into the criticism. Embrace the expectations. Carry the pressure with pride, knowing it’s a sign that you’ve earned the right to be in that moment. This is what you’ve been training for. And if it feels heavy, good—it means you’re right where you’re supposed to be. Keep the Fire Burning, Leech
