Money is Ruining Football

Before we dive into this week’s topic, I want to wish good luck to all the coaches out there who used the Gridiron Warrior or Contact Prep programs this summer to get ready for the season! For the big-time FBS programs, this NIL era of college athletics allows the rich to get even richer, often at the expense of the levels of football below them. From FCS to D2 and D3, and even down to some high schools (sadly, as this article highlights), football is going to look a lot different moving forward. As Strength Coaches and Football Coaches, we have an incredible opportunity to be the gatekeepers of what makes this game so great. Football is one of the best TEAM sports out there. It teaches players what it means to commit to a greater cause, to work together, overcome differences, and sacrifice a bit of their individuality to achieve something even greater together. In this NIL era, where dollar figures are increasingly taking center stage, it’s up to us to continue preaching and instilling the values that made us fall in love with the game in the first place. Money comes and goes, but the lessons this great game teaches— commitment, teamwork, sacrifice—last forever. Good luck this season, and keep being great! Keep the fire burning.
