I was reminded recently of a great scene from an even better movie, Good Will Hunting. In the scene, Ben Affleck’s character, Chuckie, delivers a powerful message to his best friend, Will, played by Matt Damon. Chuckie tells Will that if he’s still living in South Boston, working construction, and wasting his potential in twenty years, it would be an insult to everyone who believes in him. He challenges Will to use his talent and escape the life that’s holding him back. It's such a simple, yet powerful, scene. Initially, many of us relate to Will—the lesson of not wasting your gifts is the inspiration we need to keep pushing forward. But these days, I find myself identifying more with Chuckie’s role. As a coach, it's my responsibility to see the potential in others and support them as they strive to reach it. I want my assistants to outgrow their roles at URI. I want our athletes to succeed and play at the next level. I want everyone around me to achieve what they’re truly capable of.
But with that responsibility comes the challenge of facing uncomfortable truths. It’s about having the courage to call someone out when you know they’re capable of more. It’s about having those tough talks with an athlete who has all the talent in the world but is squandering it. It’s about telling the truth—not from a place of resentment or jealousy, but from a place of love and belief in their potential. As coaches, mentors, and leaders, we must be willing to be that voice of challenge and encouragement. We must push those around us to grow, even when it’s uncomfortable, because we see what they can become. It’s not enough to just see potential—we have to nurture it, challenge it, and help it flourish. So this week, I encourage you to think about who in your life could use that push, that tough love, to get to the next level. Don’t shy away from those conversations. Embrace them. Because sometimes, the most powerful thing you can do for someone is to believe in them enough to challenge them.
