Mistakes and Failure

I made a promise to myself to write one letter a week for the entire year, and even though this one is coming out later than usual, I’m proud to say that I’ve stuck to my word. Mistakes and Failure Today, I want to talk about failure with our student-athletes and how we coach them through it. During drills or activities, when an athlete makes mistakes, we go back and correct them. Wrong is wrong and it needs to be fixed. But what do you do when an athlete messes up multiple times in a row? You provide them with opportunities to correct their mistakes, yet they continue to falter. Personally, I don’t believe in doing a drill over and over until an athlete gets it right. That’s not how practice works. That’s not how business works. That’s not how life works. At some point, you need to acknowledge the failure and move on to the next thing. What I’ve found is that the feeling of disappointment sometimes teaches a lesson better than repeating a drill ever could. Especially for athletes who love their sport and care deeply about improving. What is your stance when it comes to repeating drills when athletes make mistakes? Do you run the same drill over and over until they get it right? Or do you provide a chance to correct their mistake and, if they can’t fix it, move on? Reply to this email and let me know your approach. I’m very curious to hear how other coaches handle this situation. As always, keep the fire burning. Leech
