The Odyssey

Welcome back to another Leech Letter,

The Odyssey came out this week. Everybody's talking about it. But here's the detail most people miss.

Note: I'm about to spoil a 2,700 year old book so if you get upset don't blame me!

Odysseus won the Trojan War in the story's first act. The other nine-tenths of the epic is just a man trying to get home.

Ten years of storms. Ten years of monsters, dead ends, and crews that quit on him. The war made him famous. The trip home made him who he was.

Coaching works the same way.

Anyone can have one great year. The right senior class walks in, you get a stud quarterback and three linemen who lift like maniacs, and suddenly you look like a genius. That's not a program. That's a town with a bunch of good kids all the same age.

The real test starts the day that class graduates.

Now you find out what you actually built. Does the weight room still fill up in February when there's no state title to chase? Do your sophomores lift like your seniors did, or did the standard walk out the door with the talent? Does the culture belong to the program, or did it belong to twelve kids who are gone?

That stretch between championships is the open sea. It's boring. Nobody writes articles about it. There's no trophy for a great Tuesday in the offseason. And that's exactly where most coaches drift. They chase the next magic class instead of building something that doesn't need one.

Odysseus didn't get home on talent. He got home because he never stopped sailing toward one thing. Every storm, every setback, every year that felt wasted, the destination never changed.

That's your job in the in-between years. Keep the standard when nobody's watching. Handle the losing season without burning the system down. Stay locked on why you coach when the wins aren't there to remind you.

One great season makes you look good. The ten years around it make you a coach.
