Contact Prep

Putting the physicality back into football. Violence is a skill. The why, the science, the three-phase system, Block Zero, neck and force absorption, and the data. Floor and a partner. Updated 2026-07-08.

We were told a big squat equals a big hitter. It sounds logical. It feels right. But it is a lie. Weight room numbers tell me how a kid moves a stationary iron bar. They tell me nothing about how he handles a 240-pound linebacker moving at full speed.

The 90-Second Teaching

Every fall, a coach watches his strongest kid get pushed around. The kid who owns the weight room gets washed out of the hole on the first snap. That is the Contact Gap: the weight room built an engine, but nobody built the chassis to survive the impact. Moving a stationary bar and moving a resisting man are two different skills. Only one of them shows up on Friday night.

Contact Prep is how you train the second skill. Physicality is not a personality trait a kid is born with. It is coached, graded, and made repeatable under pressure — the same way you coach a clean or a forty. You start with the smallest possible impact, on the floor, without a partner, and you climb. Grounded, then Combatives, then Partner Work. Ten minutes a day. A floor and a partner. No pads.

You do it in the off-season because the alternative is asking a kid to learn the most violent part of the game in August, when the stakes are highest and the margin for error is zero. That is how kids get hurt. Bags do not fight back. If your contact reps never fight back, neither will your kids.

1.The Case — Violence Is a Skill

For decades the sport ran on a lie: a big squat equals a big hitter, a 300-pound bench means a kid can control the line of scrimmage. It sounds logical. It is false. Weight room numbers are vanity metrics. They measure how well an athlete moves a stationary iron bar. They say nothing about how he strikes, stabilizes a shoulder in a collision, or moves a man who does not want to be moved.

Two different skills. Moving a stationary bar is one skill. Moving a resisting, twisting, torquing man is another. The weight room trains the first. The field asks for the second. Contact Prep is the bridge.

That is the whole argument in one image. A sled yields. A bag falls down and never fights back. If a player's only contact reps come against equipment that offers no resistance, he has never trained the thing a game actually demands. Contact Prep replaces the yielding object with a live, resisting partner — safely, and in graded steps.

2.The Science — Why It Works

This is the part that wins the argument with the skeptic in your building. Contact Prep is not a philosophy dressed up as drills. It sits on top of three well-understood mechanisms: two kinds of muscle damage, the physics of force absorption, and the workload spike that actually gets kids hurt.

Andy Ryland at USA Football teaches the distinction that anchors the whole method. When a player returns to contact, he is hit by two separate stressors. You have to train against both, and neither one lives in a barbell.

How you train it
Live partner work, graded up little by little as camp approaches.

Both fade with exposure. The first time a kid wears a helmet, his neck is sore — the weight is unaccustomed. Train the neck and introduce the load early and that soreness drops. Same logic for the whole body: raise impact volume and intensity slowly across the off-season and the athlete arrives at camp less sore and more durable. You will never fully replicate a live tackle in April, but you can start light and climb so the first collision of August is not the first collision of the year.

Creatine kinase confirms it. CK, the enzyme released when muscle is damaged, spikes with the unaccustomed heavy load of preseason and camp — then settles as the body adapts to the chronic stress. That adaptation is exactly the curve Contact Prep is trying to move to the left, into the off-season, before it costs you a player.

Force breaks you — and keeps you from breaking

The physics is the impulse-momentum relationship. Impulse is force applied over time. A collision compresses a large momentum change into a tiny window, which means enormous force. You cannot slow a football collision down — an athlete who decelerates gently to reduce force is a step late and a non-factor. So the answer is not less force. It is a body that can produce and tolerate more of it.

Force is what breaks our athletes, and force is what prevents them from being broken. A stronger athlete who has trained his tissues to tolerate high impulses is far less likely to be broken by a collision than a weaker one.

The spike is what actually gets kids hurt

Here is the part most programs miss. The biggest injury driver at the return to contact is not a lack of off-season hitting on its own — it is a sudden, unmanaged spike in total workload. The "hell week" camp that jumps from a quiet summer to full-speed blocking and tackling overnight is a workload cliff, and cliffs hurt people.

Research finding What it means for Contact Prep
Rugby league players who completed more uninterrupted preseason sessions had lower in-season injury rates (Windt et al.). Consistent graded contact exposure across the off-season buys availability in the season that matters.
Weekly training-load increases should not exceed ~10% over the prior week (Drew & Finch). Ramp contact volume in small steps. Do not double a kid's collisions week to week.
Sprinting, blocking and tackling are major systemic stresses drawn from one stress pool. When live contact returns, cut weight-room volume — especially lower body — or you overflow the cup and guarantee breakdown.
Contact is a stimulus, not a freebie. Blocking and tackling build strength too. That is why the inverse rule holds: as practice contact climbs in camp, weight-room volume must come down. Contact Prep is how you spend the off-season raising the floor so the camp ramp is a slope, not a cliff.

3.The Three-Phase System

The whole course is a logical progression from the floor to full chaos. Each phase adds unpredictability and gets closer to the game. It is not a plug-and-play template. It is a playbook — you fit the concepts into the schedule you already run.

Phase 1 · Grounded — build the foundation

Everything starts on the floor, where the impact is smallest and the closed-chain relationship between hand, shoulder, and ground can be rebuilt. This is where you re-establish the shoulder's ability to accept and transfer force before any standing contact returns.

Why floor first: the shoulder girdle has to be rebuilt after a season of contact, and force absorption capacity resets from the ground up. Skip it and the first contact session of camp looks ugly.

Phase 2 · Combatives — move a man

On the feet now. Players learn to hand-fight, strike, and move an opponent who is resisting. This is the isometric, leverage-based strength the barbell cannot teach: holding a position under duress, winning the center of gravity, staying strong single-arm and extended.

The skill focus: setting an edge as a defender, double-team steps as a lineman — the transfer points where "functional strength" stops being a cliché and starts being a rep.

Phase 3 · Partner Work — live application

The final layer. High-speed, high-intensity, competitive drills that mirror a live play. This is where confidence is forged — a kid who has won a hundred graded 1v1 battles in the off-season is not meeting live contact for the first time in August.

The by-product: these drills are conditioning and they are fun. Coaches who run them report better off-season attendance, because kids would rather compete than run another gasser.

4.Block Zero — The Post-Season Re-Entry

Most periodization frameworks start at Block One, the off-season build. Block Zero sits before it — the four-week window after the last game and before the off-season build kicks in. It is the layer most programs skip, and the one that decides whether players survive August. It is also the exact install a coach can run the Monday after a playoff loss.

Block Zero is Phase 1 of Contact Prep. You do not jump back into wrestling drills and push-pull contact after the season. You re-establish the shoulder girdle and its ability to accept impact. Start at zero. Progress from lowest impact to highest.

Bear crawl progressions — the lowest entry point

Hands under shoulders, knees under the belly button, knees one to two inches off the floor, tight crunch position the whole time. Forward, backward, then lateral (opposite arm, opposite leg). Use a whistle — every blow is one step, which forces time in position. Progress two-arm → single-arm (more shoulder-girdle demand) → bear switches (faster, more impact). AC-joint sprains from the season sit out the single-arm work at first.

Plate drops — reintroducing force absorption

Partner drops a plate; the athlete catches it on the sides — where the numbers are — not from underneath. Phase 1 is a straight-arm catch. Then add a rotational component so the obliques and the rotational sling get involved. This is depth-drop force absorption you can run without a platform. It re-teaches the shoulder to accept and transfer impact.

Rolling patterns — how to fall without getting hurt

Teach the athlete to roll over the soft tissue of the shoulder blade, chin tucked — not to reach for the ground with an outstretched hand. That reach reflex is exactly how kids tear a labrum (SLAP) or sprain an AC joint. Rolling mechanics transfer directly to game falls.

Bear holds with load — own the closed-chain position

Static bear hold, then layer plate slides, banded overhead press, and banded rows to build time in the closed-chain position and re-establish the hand/shoulder/ground relationship under a little load.

Phase 1 is the starting point every off-season. Never skip re-entry with a high school program coming off a full season. The phase length scales — four weeks for most, two if the postseason was short or non-contact — but the floor exists for every team. It doubles as proactive return-to-performance work for any athlete coming back from injury, because the closed-chain progression is the same.

5.Neck & Force Absorption — Protect the Brain

Elite programs treat neck training as non-negotiable for collision athletes, and the reason is blunt: the neck stabilizes the cervical spine, manages the weight of the helmet, and helps protect the brain. The published literature points the same direction — Collins and colleagues found that for every one pound of increased neck strength, the odds of concussion dropped about five percent. Train the neck.

Neck programming — the non-negotiable dose

The neck is a stabilizer built for endurance, so it wants frequency and reps over max load. Train it off-season and in-season both. A clean in-season model runs three-week waves of manual-resisted neck: 2×15, then 2×12, then 2×10. It stays progressive; it never gets dropped.

Superset the neck support with a lower-trap raise — activating the neck extensors potentiates the next lift.

Forward, backward, wrestling bridge — high compressive load; progress carefully by training age.
Do not break your fall with a straight arm. A fully extended arm drives a massive, abrupt impulse into the wrist, arm, and shoulder — the mechanism behind fractures and joint trauma. Teaching athletes to roll and absorb the fall, chin tucked onto the shoulder blade, is force absorption that shows up on every incidental ground contact of the season.

6.The 10-Minute Install — Where It Fits

Contact Prep does not need its own hour. It slots into the off-season day you already run. Ten minutes. The one rule: it does not super-set into lifting — no bench-press-and-plate-drop combos.

Bridging the gap — the seasonal case

Season ends around Thanksgiving. Pads do not come back until August. For a kid who plays a winter sport, then a spring sport, then disappears for half the summer, that is the better part of a year with no contact. Spring ball ends in April and the same gap opens before camp. You cannot take three months off from physicality and expect a kid to look great in preseason. Contact Prep is what keeps the skill alive across the dead months — and it works for programs with limited equipment or limited coaching access, because it needs neither.

7.Safety & Progression — What It Is NOT

The most common hesitation is that this turns into kids roughhousing until somebody gets hurt. It does not — if you follow the progression. Three guardrails define what Contact Prep is not.

  1. It is not a free-for-all. You start with beginner drills, and you start without partners. You progress an exercise only when the drill and the athletes' maturity are both ready. Let it get loose and sloppy and somebody gets hurt. Follow the ladder and they do not.
  2. It is not wrestling practice. Wrestling is great, but three hours of spin-to-win that kids hate is not the goal. Contact Prep is graded, purposeful, and short. If your winter sport does the job and kids love it, great. If not, this is the off-season substitute.
  3. It is not football practice. One coach cannot teach the technical nuance of every position at once. Part of this is deliberately generalized — the point is to get one-on-one, close-space, physical contact reps in, not to coach hand placement rep by rep.
Safer than the alternative. "Is this safe for high school kids?" It is safer than sending them into a game without it. You are teaching them to handle impact correctly — to stop using the head as a weapon and to fall without reaching — before the speed and the stakes go up.

8.The Data — Physicality Is a Math Equation

The "violence is a skill" argument is not only philosophical. Four independent data sources back it with numbers. Coaches respect numbers. Use them.

1 · 81% of NFL fumbles are manufactured

From the 2019 LA Rams "Fumbles Are Man Made" study of 456 NFL fumbles: 62% came from conscious effort (trained strip technique — Run-Run-Reach, Rake, Peanut, Hammer, Punch), 19% from raw violence of the collision, and only 19% from bad ball security.

Conscious effort + violence = 81%. If four of five fumbles at the highest level are manufactured by trained, deliberate physical technique — not luck — then failing to train your ball carriers against those techniques is malpractice.

Marketing line: "81% of fumbles in the NFL are manufactured by trained defenders. Are your ball carriers trained to handle it?"

2 & 3 · Hit Score and Truck Stick — the physics of a collision

Two independent sources landed on the same formula. Hit Score = Speed × Body Weight (@scottkuehn88). Truck Stick = Weight × Velocity (@HuthStrength). That is just momentum — p = mv — applied to who wins a collision.

The takeaway: physicality is mass in motion, not size alone. A lighter, faster player can out-physical a heavier, slower one. All three inputs — mass, velocity, and the skill to deploy them at contact — are trainable. None are inherited. Max squat and max bench do not appear anywhere in the formula.

4 · A single negative play cuts scoring probability in half

SportSource Analytics, across multiple conferences: a drive with no negative play scored a touchdown roughly 34-43% of the time. One negative play dropped that to 10-18%. A sack dropped it to single digits in most conferences.

Negative plays are manufactured by the defense — which means they are trainable. Contact Prep trains the defender to make them and the lineman to survive them. "A single negative play cuts your chance of scoring in half. What are you doing to prevent them — and create them?"

Mark Murphy, PT, DPT, SCS, CSCS — the SCS is the highest clinical sports credential in the field — endorses Contact Prep for any coach or clinician working with athletes in repetitive high-impact sports: hockey, lacrosse, football, wrestling. 9.Coach Objections — Honest Answers

"Is this safe for high school kids?"

It is safer than sending them into a game without it. You are teaching them to handle impact correctly — to fall without reaching, to brace before contact, to stop using the head as a weapon — before the pads and the game speed raise the stakes. The progression starts without partners and only advances when the drill and the athlete's maturity are ready.

"Do I need special equipment?"

No. A floor and a partner. A 25-pound plate for plate drops and a Swiss ball for neck work if you have them, but the core system runs on bodies and the ground. That is the point — it is built for the program with no budget and no five-man sled.

"Does this take too much time?"

Ten minutes. It slots into the warmup return trip, the athletic development block, or your conditioning period. If you cannot find ten minutes to make sure your players are safe and physical, you have bigger problems than this course.

"I already have a lift program. Why do I need this?"

Because your lift program does not teach a kid how to strike, how to stabilize a shoulder in a collision, or how to move a man who is resisting. Those are separate skills with separate muscle-damage profiles. The barbell builds the engine. Contact Prep builds the chassis that lets the engine survive the impact.

"Won't my winter sport (wrestling) cover this?"

Sometimes. If your kids wrestle, love it, and get real reps, that is one thing. But a wrestling practice that is three hours of spin-to-win the kids do not enjoy is not automatically better than ten focused minutes of graded contact prep. And a kid who plays basketball, or nothing, gets none of it. Contact Prep is the off-season floor that does not depend on a second sport.

"How do I know the ramp is right so I don't hurt someone?"

Two anchors from the load-management research. Keep week-to-week contact-volume increases small — roughly 10% — rather than doubling a kid's collisions overnight. And when live team contact starts in camp, pull weight-room volume, especially lower body, because practice is a major systemic stress drawing from the same pool. The goal is a slope, not the "hell week" cliff that actually gets kids hurt.

The Contact Gap
The distance between weight-room strength and on-field physicality. A strong kid who gets pancaked has an engine but no chassis.
Impact-induced muscle damage
Damage from taking a hit — the tackled back, the colliding lineman. Trained by graded exposure to impact, not by lifting.
